In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Banchero Costa said that “newbuilding activity remained active this week, with contracting spread across the container, tanker, car carrier and LNG sectors. In the container sector, Thai-based Owner Regional Container reportedly contracted 4x 1,900 teu containerships at Huangpu Wenchong, priced at approximately USD 32 million each, with deliveries scheduled between March and December 2028. ASL Shipping is understood to have contracted 2x 5,300 teu containerships at Huangpu Wenchong, with deliveries in March and September 2028, although no contract price has been reported. Options retained for two additional units, potentially bringing the total series to four vessels. Ningbo Ocean Shipping reportedly exercised options for 2x 1,900 teu containerships at Wuchang Shipbuilding, with deliveries in June 2028 and January 2030, bringing the total number of vessels ordered to four.
With many observers believing that even if an accord is reached regarding the safe transit of ships across the Hormuz Strait, it will always remain an area of potential unrest and peril, alternative routes are currently underway, mainly through the use of pipelines. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Gibson said that “as the War in the Middle East drags on, Middle East exporters continue to adapt operations as best they can, with their specific geography and access to routes bypassing the Strait of Hormuz being the primary success factor. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Oman, who all have access to domestic ports outside Hormuz, have emerged as the “winners”, but still lack sufficient alternative export routes. Iraq has access to the Mediterranean via Turkey and has been trucking fuel oil via Syria but is vulnerable to regional politics and bilateral relations. As regional producers push ahead with expanding their export options outside of Hormuz, monitoring the development of these projects is critical to determining longer term demand trends for tankers”.

According to Gibson, “Saudi Arabia is considering expanding its pipeline to the Red Sea by up to 2mbd….

The tanker market is undergoing a “violent” shift of cargo flows in recent memory. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Xclusiv said that “the crude tanker market in 2026 has undergone one of the most violent earnings transformations in recent memory, driven not by demand expansion but by the physical disruption of the world’s most critical oil chokepoint. The first four months of the year tell two sharply distinct stories: a pre-conflict period defined by firm demand and steadily escalating freight, and a conflict-period collapse in seaborne crude volumes that paradoxically drove tanker earnings to historically extreme levels, illustrating, with unusual clarity, the degree to which effective tonnage supply rather than cargo volumes governs short-term rate outcomes”.

According to Xclusiv, “through January and February, seaborne crude flows were on a constructive trajectory. January 2026 reached 1,389 million barrels, a 3.2% year-on-year increase versus January 2025’s 1,345 million barrels, while February advanced to 1,332 million barrels, a 6.0% gain over February 2025’s 1,256 million barrels. These were the strongest two-month…

In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Gibson said that “the past few days have seen the conflict extend beyond chokepoint disruption into direct strikes on production and refining infrastructure across the Gulf. Following Israel’s attack on Iran’s South Pars gas field on Wednesday, Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes on energy facilities in Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial complex was targeted, and Abu Dhabi’s Habshan gas facility and Bab oil field were shut down. Drone strikes caused fires at Kuwait’s Mina Al-Ahmadi (346 kbd) and Mina Abdullah (454 kbd) refineries, with the former being struck repeatedly, forcing a shutdown of the refinery. The SAMREF refinery in Yanbu and Haifa refinery in Israel were also struck, with damage still being assessed. After a brief pause over the weekend, attacks on vessels continued this week, as a ship was struck off Ras Laffan, and another off Khor Fakkan. Since 28 February, the UKMTO has reported a total of 19 attacks on commercial…

In Jan-Dec 2025, global crude oil loadings increased by +2.0% y-o-y to 2,224.7 mln tonnes, excluding all cabotage trade, according to vessels tracking data from LSEG. Exports from the Arabian Gulf were up by +1.7% y-o-y to 883.4 mln t in Jan-Dec 2025, accounting for 39.7% of seaborne crude trade. Exports from Russia (including oil of Kazakh origin) increased by +2.1% y-o-y in Jan-Dec 2025 to 233.4 mln tonnes, or 10.5% of global trade. From South America, exports increased by +11.0% y-o-y to 220.6 mln t, with a share of 9.9%. From the USA, exports declined by -8.0% y-o-y at 181.7 mln tonnes in Jan-Dec 2025, an 8.2% share.
The dry bulk market could face a shift in ton-mile demand moving forward. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Intermodal said that “as 2025 draws to a close, the transitional period for the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is coming to an end. From January 1st, 2026, CBAM enters its definitive phase, with reporting and financial obligations taking effect. However, while importers will be liable for emissions embedded in goods imported during 2026, the actual obligation to purchase CBAM certificates has been postponed to February 2027. CBAM imposes a duty on emission-intensive products at the EU border, with its scope covering the high carbon intensity sectors of aluminium, iron and steel, cement, electricity, fertilizers, and hydrogen. Importantly, CBAM targets the middle of the value chain rather than its extremes: it applies to precursors, primary forms, and semi-finished products such as pig iron, clinker, steel slabs, bars, and tubes, as well as some simple finished goods like bolts and screws. However, it excludes both raw materials, such as unprocessed iron ore, and complex finished goods like vehicles and appliances”.

In the last calendar year, Jan-Dec 2024, total seaborne exports of soybeans declined by -5.0% year-onyear to 142.3 mln tonnes, according to vessel tracking data from AXS Marine. This year, however, things have turned around quite spectacularly. In Jan-Oct 2025, global loadings increased by +8.9% y-o-y to 138.6 mln t, from 127.3 mln t in Jan-Oct 2024. This was also above the record 128.8 mln tonnes loaded in Jan-Oct 2023. The largest exporter of soybeans by far is Brazil, which accounted for 74.1% of global soybean exports by volume in Jan-Oct 2025”.

A potential peace in Ukraine could, in theory, return the tanker market to some sort of normalncy. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Gibson said that “tanker tonne miles (crude/DPP/CPP) grew 5.4% in 2022 following the invasion and by 7.2% in 2023 after the implementation of the European/US embargo on Russian oil and oil price cap framework. Whilst not all of this growth was attributable to the war, the majority was, particularly in 2023. Tonne mile growth has since slowed, gaining just 1% in 2024, and contracting 4% for the year to date”.

However, “it remains heavily debated whether trade flows might return to “normal” in the event of a peace deal. The current leaders of the UK, France, and Germany, as well as the Baltic and other EU States might try particularly hard to prevent a swing back to Russian energy trade, especially in the event of a “bad deal” for Ukraine. Yet, with President Trump effectively ruling out Russia giving up all its territorial gains, as well as Ukraine joining NATO, concessions appear to already be on the table. If it is assumed that any deal is likely to involve sanctions relief, then some normalization in trade flows is…

This follows the +2.4% y-o-y growth recorded in 2023, and the +4.4% y-oy growth in 2022. The first 6 months of 2025 have been even better, with global loadings increasing by +6.6% y-o-y to 77.3 mln tonnes, from 72.5 mln t in the same period of 2024.
