Geopolitical tensions, technological shifts, and supply chain volatility are persistent challenges, forcing organizations to rethink their strategies. But with every challenge comes opportunity.

Based on insights from Windward’s 2025 Top Trends in Global Trade report, this blog post explores how those who can anticipate and adapt to disruptions – whether due to shifting trade routes, labor disputes, or extreme weather – will not only weather the storm, but emerge stronger. The ability to move from reactive to proactive decision-making will define success.

From Uncertainty to Opportunity

Uncertainty is here to stay, due to geopolitical events and accompanying risk mitigation strategies, supply chain volatility, and change created by emerging technologies. The good news is that opportunities often arise from crises…

For instance, bunkering organizations who were the first to know about trade routes that changed due to the Houthis attacks in the Red Sea were able to capitalize.

Organizations can’t be proactive if they do not know what’s coming around the corner. Unknown unknowns pop up, seemingly out of nowhere, and will likely create new headaches this year for traders and shippers, supply chain and logistics organizations, and government…

Houthi Rebels attacked a tanker that was sailing from Russia to China…didn’t they previously announce that route would be protected? This week’s Maritime Global Trade Roundup has AI-powered insights on the incident, plus:

The Houthi-Red Sea paradox: the Houthis have escalated their attacks against merchant vessels since April, after several months in which no attacks were carried out, but there was an 89% increase in weekly area visits in the Red Sea and Aden regions from March 10-May 11 by container vessels owned by the six major carriers. We also look at the recent price hikes.

Russia found a loophole to sell its oil to the EU via Turkey. This has implications for maritime risk and we’ve got the details…

Two AWS experts sat down with Windward’s Co-Founder and CEO to discuss how vertical AI + generative AI will positively disrupt the maritime ecosystem and revealed the differentiator that will enable organization to really reap the benefits. Watch it now.

Why Was a Tanker on the China-Russia Route Attacked?

U.S. CENTCOM announced on May 18 that the Houthis attacked MT Wind (IMO: 9252967), a Panama-flagged tanker. The vessel was hit, but no casualties were reported.

What’s going on with an alleged Iranian spying vessel? How did Iran’s missile attack and ship hijacking impact the six major carriers?

This week’s Maritime Global Trade Roundup has these answers and more, including info on Russia’s oil supply to China. Check out the easily-digestible highlights and trends, powered by Maritime AI™ insights.

First, take a quick look at Windward’s refreshed homepage!

Alleged Iranian Spy Ship Returns to Iran

The Behshad, an Iranian general cargo vessel owned by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, crossed the Hormuz Strait last week after sailing in the Red Sea for three years.

The vessel has anchored at the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) border area of Yemen, Eritrea, and Saudi Arabia since 2021. According to open sources, it was used as an espionage vessel operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Red Sea.

The vessel departed its position at the beginning of 2024 for the first time and sailed south in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, sailing for three months in the Gulf of Aden – within Somalia and Djibouti’s EEZs.

The vessel’s AIS transmission was lost on April 4. On April 18, the ship appeared in the Gulf of Oman, updating its destination to the port of Bandar Abbas. The vessel then crossed the Hormuz…

Your AIS Data is Foundational…

You depend upon AIS data as the foundation for many of your IT projects. As a chief information officer (CIO) or chief technology officer (CTO), AIS data is the lifeblood of understanding constantly evolving maritime trade flows and mapping the movements of vessels. The Panama Canal drought, Red Sea disruptions, Iran attack and hijackings, and the lifting and then reimposition of U.S. sanctions on Venezuela are reminders of how trade routes can change in the blink of an eye.

This is just one aspect of AIS data’s utility. It is also critical for identifying hot spots to optimize fleet locations, as well as for fleet monitoring. It helps with tracking and predicting vessels’ arrival to ports, cargo tracking, and obtaining negotiable bills of lading (BoL).

Your business requires data – to generate more leads and ensure compliance, by knowing exactly who you are doing business with.

…But It’s a Cracked Foundation

AIS data comes with a great deal of “noise” and effective operation involves taking the data, processing it, and producing actionable insights. Effective pattern recognition and adapting to changes is difficult without a good base of historical data, as noted in our executive brief on Windward’s AI technology, but…

The MSC Aries Seizure in the Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps seized the MSC Aries (IMO: 9857169), a 366-meter container vessel, while en-route to the Hormuz Strait on April 13. The IRGC claimed that the vessel was seized due to a link with Israel.

The MSC Aries is owned by the British company “Zodiac Maritime Limited,” which is connected to Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.

Windward insights show that the vessel was seized after crossing the EEZ border between the UAE and Iran, at 25°39’40″N, 54°59’19″E, after the vessel made a port call at Port Khalifa, the UAE.
